The History of Recipes

We are able to trace the history of `recipes` back into the far past, certainly as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, these, old recipes were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful.

As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius also recounts how the cooks of his times made use of many different herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example bay, rue and dill.

During the next few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve the most exotic meals, and because of this the best chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing recipes common in their social group.

By the advent of the 20th century, cooking publications were highly popular mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having increased spare time and being a little richer.
