The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of meal recipes way back into distant history, at least as far back as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. Having said that, mostly, these early records were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were two interesting books from the fourteenth century : a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they are unconnected to the spicy food that appears on menues today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the menues of the rich people of the time. Over the succeeding few centuries, the rich and powerful families of the West competed with each other to serve up the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Even so, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe publications really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to assembling, trying out, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time. When we get to the 20th century, cookery books were in high demand, due to more people being able to read, more leisure time and being a little richer. The TV revolution gave us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Almond Morsels recipe.
