The History of Recipes

It is quite feasible to prove the history of written cooking instructions way back into the distant past, in fact as far as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these ancient recipes were just simple pictorial instructions for preparing food.

Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts is a series of tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful and blissful.

Closer to modern times, there are two books dating from the fourteenth century ; a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are not about the indian curry that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals cooked for the rich and powerful of the time.

During the next few hundred years, the powerful families of the West strove to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on our web site.
