Ingredients
1 2/3 cup flour
1 cup sugar, brown, light
1/4 cup cocoa
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup ; water
1/3 cup oil
1 tsp vinegar
3/4 cup vanilla extract
1/2 cup chocolate chips, semi-sweet
1/2 cup banana, 1 med ripe
Directions
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a square pan, 8"x8"x2". In
a small mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda and
salt. Add water, oil, vinegar and vanilla. Stir in mashed ripe
banana; beat until smooth. Pour into the prepared pan. Sprinkle
chocolate chips over the top. Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until a wooden
toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in the pan on a
wire rack. Cut into squares.

The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existence of recipes way back into the far past, in fact as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some scripts detailing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into appetizers, main meal and desserts, a very modern way of dining. He also describes how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of a wide range of herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like thyme, mint and asafoetida. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including spices like coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created an explosion in books on cooking, most of which still exist in private libraries. The arrival of TV brought us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
