The History of Recipes

It is quite feasible to trace the history of recipes way back into the far past, in truth as far back as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, these, ancient cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.

Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of documents which described recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were split into starters, main course and afters, something we still use today. Additionally, he informs us how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of many herbs, including a few you will know such as bay, rue and dill.

During the following few hundred years, the powerful families of Europe tried to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to collecting, verifying, and publishing popular recipes of the day.

The revolution that is television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading.
