The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existance of recipes way back into the far past, in truth as far back as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. During the time of the Roman Empire a man called Apicius created some scripts which described recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. He describes how the meals were divided into appetizers, main course and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also informs us how the early Romans were skilled in the use of a wide range of spices, including many that are still in use today for example basil, mint and dill. Over the following few hundred years, the upper-class families of Europe tried to offer the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best cooks and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cookery and cookery books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to assembling, testing, and recording recipes common in their social group. The introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
