The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existance of recipes far back into ancient history, in fact as far into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, old cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts are a few clay tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have two interesting recipe books from the 14th Century : a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books are unconnected to the indian curry that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of food prepared for the rich people of the time. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices created an eruption in recipe books, some of which still exist in academic collections. Over the next few centuries, the rich families of Europe tried to offer the best banquets, and because of this the best cooks and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that cookery and recipe publications really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, trying out, and publishing popular recipes of the day. The introduction of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
