The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of written recipes back into antiquity, in truth as far back as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, generally, these early cook books were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel exhilarated. Later on, there are two books from the fourteenth century - one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are nothing to do with the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of meals eaten by the nobility of the period. For the centuries that followed, the powerful families of Europe tried to offer the best banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe collections really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collating, testing, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. By the time we get to the 20th century, cooking books were starting to become popular due to increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and being a little richer. The introduction of the TV brought us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
