The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes way back into ancient history, certainly as far into history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, sadly, these ancient recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to food historians are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful. As we move into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts describing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, entrees and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. This early Roman chef recounts how the cooks of his times made use of many different aromatic flavours, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example bay, rue and asafoetida. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including parsley and basil. These new spices and herbs created a surge in manuscripts on food, the majority of which still exist in private libraries. The revolution that is television brought us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
