The History of Recipes

Food historians have proved the existance of recipes far back into the far past, certainly as far back as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, generally, these ancient recipes were just very basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a series of tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel exhilarated.

During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius created some documents describing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. He recounts how the roman meals were separated into starters, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. He also describes how the cooks of his times were skilled in the use of many herbs, including some that we all recognise such as thyme, rue and dill.

Later on, there were some interesting books which date from the 14th Century - one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books are unconnected to the spicy food that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of food eaten by the rich and powerful of the time.

Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from Arab countries, such as coriander, parsley, and basil. These new culinary innovations created an eruption in cookery books, some of which are kept safe in private libraries.

By the advent of the twentieth century, cookery publications were greatly in demand mostly due to more people being able to read, more free time and being a little richer.
