The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of meal recipes back into distant history, at least as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further. Having said that, mostly, these old cook books were just simple pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics is a series of tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius assembled some documents detailing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, entrees and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius also informs us how the Roman chefs used many different spices, including some familiar names such as thyme, mint and asafoetida. Later, there are a couple of cookery books published in the 1300s : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books are nothing to do with the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food served to the nobility of that period. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and spices from Arab cuisine, such as basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices was responsible for an increase in manuscripts on cookery, most of which are now in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Cherry Bread (Machine) Large Loaf recipe.
