The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of meal recipes back into the distant past, in fact as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, sadly, these ancient cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius describes how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius also recounts how the Romans made use of many different herbs, including some that we all recognise like basil, mint and dill. For the decades that followed, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe strove to serve the most exotic meals, and as a result cooks and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing the recipes of their peers. By the time we get to the 20th century, cookbooks were starting to become popular due to better eduction, more free time and having more money to spend. |
