The History of Recipes

We can trace the history of meal recipes far back into antiquity, at least as far back as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, these, early cookbooks were just basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.

In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a series of tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful.

Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, main course and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. This early Roman chef tells us how the Romans were skilled in the use of a good variety of herbs, including many that are still in use today like basil, mint and dill.

Later on, we find two recipe books from the 14th Century : a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these are not about the spicy food that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of food prepared by the cooks of the rich people of the time.

Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes prompted a torrent in manuscripts on cookery, some of which are kept safe in private cookery archives.

The introduction of the TV gave us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading.
