The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of `recipes` far back into history, certainly as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, generally, these old records were just basic pictorial recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe found, according to academics is a collection of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we have two recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century - a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books are not about the indian food that is served today, but rather accounts of the types of food on the tables of the rich people of the time. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the upper-class families of Europe competed to offer the most exotic meals, and as a result cooks and their recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and cookery books really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The TV revolution brings us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on our site. |
