The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of `recipes` way back into the far past, at least as far into history as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, mostly, these early cook books were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts is a collection of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move on, we have some recipe books from the fourteenth century ; a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they have no connection with the spicy food that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich people of that time. During the next few centuries, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe competed to offer the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s that cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, testing, and recording popular recipes of the day. The revolution that is television brings us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
