The History of Recipes
Food historians have found proof that recipes existed way back into history, at least as far into history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. However, mostly, these early cookbooks were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were some recipe books which appeared in the fourteenth century ; a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are nothing to do with the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather accounts of the types of meals on the tables of the rich people of those days. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from the East, including spices like parsley and basil. These new herbs and spices prompted a surge in books on cooking, many of which still exist in private cookery archives. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
