The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of written cooking instructions back into distant history, in truth as far as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. However, generally, these ancient recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts is a series of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful. Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a number of scripts which described recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals were divided into starters, entrees and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius tells us how the ancient chefs made use of a good variety of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example bay, fennel and dill. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and spices was responsible for a surge in books on cookery, some of which are now in private collections. The introduction of the TV brought us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
