The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existence of recipes back into the far past, certainly as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to historians is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `wonderful`. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have a couple of recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these are unconnected to the curry that is popular today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the tables of the rich people of that time. Over the next few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve up the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe collections really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cooking publications were highly popular mostly as a result of more people being able to read, people having more leisure time and having more money. |
