The History of Recipes

We can trace the history of `recipes` way back into the distant past, in fact as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Having said that, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just very simple pictorial instructions for meal preparation.

In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to historians are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel exhilarated.

Later on, there are a couple of books published in the 1300s ; one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books are not about the spicy food that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of meals served to the rich and powerful of those days.

Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices prompted a torrent in cookery books, most of which are now in private collections.

During the succeeding few centuries, the upper-class families of the West strove to offer the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, testing, and recording recipes of the day.

By the time we get to the twentieth century, cookery publications were greatly in demand mostly due to more people being able to read, leisure time and a general increase in wealth.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this recipe site.
