The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of `recipes` back into the distant past, in truth as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, sadly, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians are a few stone tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful. Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main course and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius tells us how the cooks of Roman times used a good variety of herbs, including many that are still in use today for example bay, rue and dill. Over the succeeding few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Europe strove to serve the best banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. However, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes of the day. The TV revolution brings us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
