The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of meal recipes far back into antiquity, certainly as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians is a collection of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `blissful`. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some scripts detailing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals were separated into appetizers, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius informs us how the cooks of Roman times made use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few you will know like thyme, fennel and parsley. As we move on, we find a couple of cookery books dating from the 1300s - a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are not about the spicy food that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the upper classes. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and tastes led to a torrent in manuscripts on cookery, the majority of which are now in private libraries. By the time we get to the 1900s, cook books are highly popular mostly due to higher levels of literacy, more free time and having more money to spend. The arrival of television gave us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
