The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be found way back into history, in truth as far as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. In practice though, sadly, these early records were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts which described recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, something we still use today. Additionally, he tells us how the cooks of his times made use of many aromatic flavors, including a few you will know for example basil, mint and asafoetida. Over the succeeding few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Europe tried to lay on the best banquets, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day. The TV revolution brings us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Chip Pecan Pie recipe.
