The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of written cooking instructions far back into the far past, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful. Later on, we find a couple of interesting books published in the fourteenth century ; a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books are nothing to do with the curry that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the nobility of that time. For the centuries that followed, the powerful and rich competed with each other to offer the most extravagent banquests, and because of this the best chefs and their recipe collections were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe publications really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. The introduction of the TV gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cake (Plain Jane) recipe.
