The History of Recipes

It is actually possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions way back into the distant past, in fact as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, mostly, these ancient recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to food historians are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful.

As we move into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a few documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. He describes how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also recounts how the ancient Romans made use of a wide range of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like basil, rue and parsley.

Moving on, there are two books published in the 14th Century : a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books are nothing to do with the indian curry that is served today, but rather accounts of the types of food eaten by the upper classes of the period.

Later, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many new foods and spices from the holy lands, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes created an outbreak in recipe books, some of which still exist in private libraries.

By the advent of the 1900s, recipe books are starting to become popular as a result of better eduction, people having more free time and having more money to spend.

The revolution that is television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now.
