The History of Recipes
We can track the history of written recipes way back into the distant past, at least as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. However, generally, these early records were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated. Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a few documents describing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius informs us how the Romans were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavors, including many that are still in use today such as bay, fennel and parsley. Later on, there are a couple of interesting books which were published in the 14th Century : a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these are unconnected to the indian curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of meals eaten by the upper classes of the period. Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many foods and spices from the holy lands, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices caused an eruption in books on cookery, many of which are now in private cookery archives. The introduction of the TV brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
