The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be traced way back into the far past, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old records were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have a couple of books published in the fourteenth century ; a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are nothing to do with the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but rather accounts of the types of food on the menues of the rich and powerful of the time. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and spices from the holy lands, including spices like parsley and basil. These new spices and herbs prompted a surge in recipe manuscripts, many of which still exist in private cookery archives. The arrival of TV brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our web site. |
