The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of `recipes` far back into antiquity, in fact as far into history as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, in the main part, these old recipes were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a series of tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. As we move on, we find some books from the fourteenth century : a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books have no connection with the indian curry that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of those days. During the next few centuries, the powerful and wealthy houses strove to serve up the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cookery and recipe books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down the recipes of their peers. By the advent of the 20th century, cook books are greatly in demand due to more people being able to read, people having increased free time and a general increase in wealth. |
