The History of Recipes

Written recipes as an idea can be traced back into distant history, certainly as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and maybe further still. However, these, old cook books were just simple pictorial instructions for preparing meals.

In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics are some stone tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful and blissful.

Later on, there were two interesting recipe books published in the fourteenth century - a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books have no connection with the curry that is served today, but rather accounts of the types of meals served to the nobility of that period.

Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and spices from Arab cooking, including spices like coriander, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs created an outbreak in manuscripts on cooking, the majority of which still exist in private cookery archives.

For the centuries that followed, the rich and powerful families of Europe tried to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipes were at a premium. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cooking and cookery books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, trying out, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them.

By the time we get to the 20th century, cookery publications are starting to become popular as a result of more people being able to read, people having increased free time and having more disposable income.

The introduction of the TV brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now.
