The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked way back into the distant past, at least as far back into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, mostly, these old cook books were just simple pictorial instructions for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are a few clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts describing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, main course and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius recounts how the early Romans used a good variety of spices and herbs, including a few you will know for example thyme, fennel and parsley. Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes created a torrent in manuscripts on cookery, some of which are kept safe in private collections. The TV revolution brought us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this site. |
