The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be observed far back into the distant past, certainly as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into appetizers, main course and desserts, something we still use today. Aspicius recounts how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of a good variety of herbs, including some familiar names such as bay, rue and parsley. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we find a couple of recipe books which date from the 1300s : a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are unconnected to the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared for the rich and powerful of the time. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including spices such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes led to a torrent in books on cookery, many of which still exist in private libraries. When we get to the 1900s, cookbooks were highly popular mostly due to more people being able to read, leisure time and being a little richer. The arrival of TV gave us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Heaps recipe.
