The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existence of recipes far back into history, in fact as far as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, sadly, these ancient records were just very simple pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to food historians is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful. Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created some scripts which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were split into starters, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius recounts how the Romans made use of a wide range of herbs and spices, including a few you will know for example thyme, mint and dill. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new foods and spices was responsible for an explosion in cookery books, many of which are now in private collections. By the time we get to the 20th century, cooking publications were increasing in popularity mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having more spare time and having more money to spend. The introduction of the TV brings us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on our web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Icing recipe.
