The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of recipes far back into the distant past, in truth as far into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, generally, these old recipes were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
During Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of scripts which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, main meal and dessert, something we still use today. This early Roman chef informs us how the Romans made use of a good variety of herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example thyme, mint and dill. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from the East, such as basil and coriander. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to an eruption in publications on food, most of which still exist in private cookery archives. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our site. |
