The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of recipes way back into distant history, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, mostly, these early recipes were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a number of documents describing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. This early Roman chef informs us how the ancient chefs made use of a good variety of aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as basil, rue and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods, spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices caused a surge in manuscripts on cookery, most of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The introduction of the TV brings us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on our site. |
