The History of Recipes

We are able to read the history of meal recipes far back into ancient history, certainly as far back into history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, mostly, these old recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to academics is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

As we move on, there were a couple of recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century ; a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these are not about the curry that appears on menues today, but rather recipes for the types of food served to the upper classes.

Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from the East, including spices like parsley and basil. The introduction of these new foods and spices prompted an increase in publications on food, some of which still exist in private collections.

During the next few centuries, the rich and powerful families of the West competed to serve up the most extravagent meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe publications really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and recording popular recipes of the day.

By the advent of the 20th century, cookery books are highly popular mostly as a result of increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more disposable income.

The revolution that is television gave us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site.
