The History of Recipes

We are able to read the history of written recipes way back into antiquity, in truth as far as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, these, ancient cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.

In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to experts is a series of tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated.

Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created some scripts detailing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, a very modern way of dining. He also describes how the ancient chefs made use of many herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise for example basil, rue and dill.

For the decades that followed, the upper-class families of Europe competed to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a result cooks and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and cookery books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes of the day.

The arrival of television brings us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site.
