The History of Recipes

Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be found back into the distant past, at least as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, mostly, these old recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians are a few tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful.

Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents detailing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, entrees and afters, something we still use today. He also describes how the Roman chefs used a wide range of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example basil, mint and parsley.

In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices created an outbreak in manuscripts on cookery, most of which still exist in private libraries.

By the arrival of the twentieth century, cooking publications are highly popular mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, more free time and having more money to spend.

The introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this web site.
