The History of Recipes
Academics have found proof that recipes existed way back into the far past, certainly as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. In practice though, these, early cook books were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Closer to modern times, we have a couple of cookery books published in the 14th Century ; a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books are nothing to do with the indian curry that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of food prepared for the rich and powerful of that time. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from Arab cooking, including parsley and basil. The introduction of these new tastes created a surge in books on cookery, the majority of which are now in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
