The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of meal recipes way back into distant history, in fact as far back as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, generally, these early cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `wonderful`. Moving on, we find some recipe books dating from the fourteenth century - one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books are not about the curry that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the menues of the upper classes. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from the holy land, including coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes created a torrent in manuscripts on food, the majority of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. During the next few hundred years, the upper classes competed to offer the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipes were highly sought after. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and cookery books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cookbooks were in great demand, due to better eduction, people having increased free time and being a little richer. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
