The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to track the history of written cooking instructions far back into the far past, in truth as far back as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early records were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians is a collection of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a number of documents which described recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals were split into appetizers, main meal and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius recounts how the chefs of Roman times made use of many different aromatic flavors, including some familiar names for example basil, mint and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices such as parsley and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to an explosion in manuscripts on food, most of which are now in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
