The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of meal recipes way back into antiquity, in fact as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, mostly, these old records were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `blissful`. Later, there were a couple of books dating from the 14th Century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they have no connection with the spicy food that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared for the rich. For the decades that followed, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe strove to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a result cooks and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The arrival of television brings us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
