The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of meal recipes back into ancient history, in fact as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, mostly, these early cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we find two recipe books from the fourteenth century ; a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they are nothing to do with the indian food that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of food eaten by the rich people of that time. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the powerful and wealthy houses competed to serve up the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s that haute cuisine and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
