The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of recipes far back into antiquity, in truth as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. In practice though, in the main part, these ancient records were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `wonderful`. Later on, we find two books which date from the 1300s - one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these are nothing to do with the indian food that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of food enjoyed by the upper classes of the time. For the centuries that followed, the powerful and wealthy houses tried to offer the most exotic meals, and as a result chefs and their recipes were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The introduction of the TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
