The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of `recipes` back into the far past, in fact as far back as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, sadly, these ancient cook books were just very simple pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. Later on, we have some interesting books from the fourteenth century : a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books are unconnected to the spicy food that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the menues of the rich and wealthy people of the period. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices led to a torrent in manuscripts on cookery, the majority of which are kept safe in private collections. For the next few years, the rich families of Wesstern Europe strove to offer the best banquets, and because of this the best chefs and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that cooking and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to collating, verifying, and publishing popular recipes of the day. The introduction of the TV brings us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Pecan Kisses recipe.
