The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of `recipes` way back into antiquity, at least as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, these, early recipes were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to historians is a collection of stone tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a number of documents describing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into appetizers, main course and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius tells us how the early Romans made use of many herbs, including many that are still in use today like thyme, mint and parsley. Later on, there were a couple of interesting books dating from the fourteenth century : one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are not about the spicy food that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the nobility of those days. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from the East, including basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to an increase in cookery books, most of which are now in academic collections. By the advent of the twentieth century, cookery books were in great demand, mostly due to increased literacy, people having increased free time and having more money. The introduction of the TV brings us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
