The History of Recipes

We can track the history of written recipes far back into antiquity, in truth as far back into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, generally, these old recipes were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.

In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to food historians are some tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

Later on, we find a couple of interesting cookery books from the 1300s ; a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these are not about the indian curry that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals cooked for the rich and powerful of that period.

For the next few years, the powerful and wealthy houses tried to serve up the best banquets, and consequentially chefs and their recipe collections were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collecting, verifying, and publishing the recipes of their peers.

By the advent of the twentieth century, cook books are increasing in popularity due to better eduction, more spare time and having more money to spend.
