The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of `recipes` back into antiquity, certainly as far as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to experts are some ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of documents detailing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals were split into appetizers, main course and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also tells us how the Roman cooks made use of many herbs and spices, including many that are still in use today like thyme, rue and dill. As we move on, there are a couple of cookery books from the 14th Century : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books are not about the spicy food that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared for the rich people of that period. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices created an increase in books on cooking, the majority of which are now in private libraries. By the advent of the 20th century, cooking books were highly popular due to increased literacy, more leisure time and disposable income. |
