The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of written cooking instructions far back into ancient history, in fact as far into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, generally, these early cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics are some tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful. As we move on, we find some books which appeared in the 14th Century ; a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are not about the spicy food that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of meals served to the upper classes of the time. During the following few hundred years, the families of Europe strove to serve the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century the formal cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down recipes common in their social group. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookbooks were greatly in demand mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having more leisure time and having more money to spend. The arrival of television gave us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
