The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of meal recipes far back into history, certainly as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, sadly, these old records were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
As we move into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of documents detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. He recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main meal and dessert, a very modern way of dining. This early Roman chef informs us how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavours, including many that are still in use today such as basil, rue and parsley. During the next few centuries, the powerful and rich houses competed to serve up the most exotic meals, and as a result the best chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. However, it was during the 19th century that fine cookery and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to collating, trying out, and recording popular recipes of the day. The revolution that is television gave us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
