The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of recipes far back into distant history, in truth as far into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
During Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he recounts how the roman meals were split into appetizers, main course and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius describes how the chefs of Roman times made use of a good variety of herbs, including some familiar names for example bay, fennel and parsley. Over the following few hundred years, the rich families of Europe strove to serve the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. However, it was during the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Shortcakes recipe.
