The History of Recipes
Food historians have found proof that recipes existed far back into history, certainly as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a number of scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, main course and desserts, a very modern way of dining. This early Roman chef recounts how the ancient cooks used many spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example thyme, fennel and parsley. Over the following few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve up the most extravagent meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collating, testing, and publishing the recipes of their peers. The arrival of TV brought us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
