The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into ancient history, in fact as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, sadly, these old cookbooks were just basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a series of tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel exhilarated. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are a couple of interesting books which appeared in the fourteenth century : a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are nothing to do with the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of food prepared by the cooks of the rich and powerful of those days. In the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs led to a surge in cookery books, most of which are kept safe in academic collections. Over the next few hundred years, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve up the most exotic meals, and because of this the best chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it was during the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The arrival of TV brought us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
