The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of written recipes back into antiquity, in fact as far back as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to food historians are some stone tablets in Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `blissful`. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled some documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main course and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Additionally, he informs us how the ancient cooks made use of many aromatic flavours, including many that are still in use today for example thyme, mint and dill. During the next few centuries, the powerful families of Europe strove to offer the best banquets, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, trying out, and recording the recipes of their peers. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe publications were greatly in demand due to better eduction, people having more free time and having more money to spend. The revolution that is television brought us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
