The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be observed back into history, at least as far into history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, these, early cookbooks were just very simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are some recipe books which appeared in the fourteenth century : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they are unconnected to the indian curry that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich and powerful of those days. When we get to the 1900s, cooking books were in great demand, mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having increased spare time and having more money. |
